Headed to Japan this fall to continue my Japanese language study and to learn more about Japanese Buddhism! My next project will be to figure out the story of Buddhism among the Ainu in the northern regions of Japan throughout history and how it syncretized with Ainu indigenous religious practice!

I specialize in Shingon Buddhist art and architecture history during the Kamakura and Muromachi Periods of Japanese history, but my interests and research projects have included Edo Period poetry, Japanese Buddhist responses to Covid, and Buddhist-influenced anti-Darwinist theories of evolution!

I'm also producer, editor, and sidekick on Bright on Buddhism, a podcast where my good friend @nbright.bsky.social and I discuss Buddhism. We're going for a casual, approachable, scholarly tone on the subject.
