We honor those killed by recommitting ourselves to the living and the work of repairing the world. And we continue to pray for the immediate and safe return of the 48 people still held hostage and for a lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

Two years ago, Hamas’ acts of unspeakable violence took 1,200 lives from us.

North Carolina’s diversity is our strength, and our state is more joyful and strong thanks to the many contributions of Hispanic and Latino North Carolinians.

Happy Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month!

Vaccinations are a key tool for keeping North Carolinians healthy during cold and flu season. NC DHHS Secretary Sangvai and I got our flu shots last week, and we encourage everyone who can to do the same.

If you have questions, please talk with your health care provider.

I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work on real solutions that make North Carolina families safer.

To all across North Carolina observing Yom Kippur – G’mar chatima tova. May you have a peaceful, prayerful, and meaningful fast, and may you be inscribed into the Book of Life.

I am relieved to hear FEMA say operations will not be impacted by the government shutdown, and I call upon the administration to grant an exception for all WNC recovery-related efforts.
We cannot afford for dysfunction in Washington to disrupt this critical work.

I am grateful to the dedicated public servants and partners who have worked incredibly hard over the past year to rebuild and strengthen infrastructure that keeps western North Carolina moving.

It was a pleasure to welcome the Governor’s Council of Hispanic and Latino Affairs to the People’s House to celebrate Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month.

He is a true public servant, and I wish him a joyful retirement. Under his leadership, with 97% of once-damaged state-maintained roads reopened, North Carolina is looking so much better than it did one year ago. Thank you, Secretary Hopkins.

I asked him to delay his retirement at the end of last year to help steer us through the early phases of Hurricane Helene recovery, and I am so grateful he did.

After serving the state for more than 30 years, NC Department of Transportation Secretary Joey Hopkins worked his final week on the job last week.

North Carolina is the third-fastest-growing state in the country, and we are seeing unprecedented energy demands. I look forward to the work of the Energy Policy Task Force as they come up with a plan to make sure the state’s energy supply is affordable and can keep up with demand.

This morning, I signed legislation that will shorten lines at the DMV and provide $65.5 million for Tropical Storm Chantal relief.

Like so many organizations in western North Carolina, Valley Hope Church has shown us what it means to come together and support your neighbor. Thank you for all you have done and for having me this weekend.

Valley Hope Church in Swannanoa is a part of the Better Together Coalition that united churches and nonprofits in the wake of Hurricane Helene to rebuild Swannanoa Valley.

And I am grateful to state and local law enforcement and the U.S. Coast Guard who worked quickly and collaboratively to apprehend the suspect.

Making sure people feel safe and are safe in their communities is critical, and it’s clear we have more work to do.

Southport is a tight-knit community that is reeling from the tragic shooting over the weekend. I am heartbroken for the three families who each lost a loved one in this senseless act of violence.

There’s no time to waste when it comes to helping folks recover. I’ll continue to demand urgency in the recovery from Hurricane Helene – from my team, from the state, and from the federal government. By working together, I know we can build a safer, stronger western North Carolina.

Working together across state, local, and federal government, along with nonprofits, churches, businesses, and volunteers, we can rebuild strong communities and ensure that the stories of western North Carolina are not forgotten.

I’ve been moved by the stories I’ve heard from western North Carolinians all weekend. Stories of people coming together, helping one another, and rebuilding.
