I was the chief author who passed the conversion therapy ban in MN and while doing that, I met many people who experienced the so-called therapy. And I need to be clear, conversion therapy is TORTURE. It is ineffectual torture that we sanction for children. And it's WRONG.

We urge the Court to side with the majority of Americans who want to protect young people from conversion therapy!

“It’s intellectually honest and deeply moving to see conservative voices saying, ‘This isn’t therapy. This isn’t faith. This is abuse.’ I hope the Court listens.” - NCLR Legal Director @shannonminter5.bsky.social

This Tuesday, SCOTUS will hear Chiles v. Salazar - a landmark case on conversion therapy.

There have been a lot of myths circling around about what conversion therapy is. Scroll to get the facts!
Myth vs. Fact: Conversion Therapy

"However, in my view, ending the practice of conversion therapy is simply the right thing to do — and my stance on this issue is rooted in my Christian values, as well as my personal family experiences."

Conversion therapy does not protect, it harms.
Myth: Conversion therapy protects young people from a dangerous future.

Fact: Research shows that youth who are subject to conversion therapy are more than twice as likely to attempt suicide.
nclrights.bsky.social
Conversion therapy makes people feel isolated and unaccepted. Often, people who are subject to conversion practices are pushed away from their places of worship.
Myth: Conversion therapy aligns with values of faith.

Fact: Research shows that youth who experience conversion “therapy” are likely to feel shame, confusion, and disconnection from their faith communities. Many religious groups continue to express support for ending these dangerous practices.

Just because there is a ban on conversion therapy DOESN'T mean that a therapist is going to push someone toward being LGBTQ. These bans DO prevent dangerous, discredited practices.
Myth: When there is a ban on conversion therapy, therapists are more likely to push someone toward being LGBTQ.

Fact: Therapists can’t ethically pressure young people toward a specific outcome. Conversion therapy relies on a false promise that a person's gender or sexuality can be changed if they just work hard enough, and create an environment where only one outcome is acceptable.

CONVERSION 👏 "THERAPY" 👏 IS 👏 NOT 👏 THERAPY!

(Big emphasis on the quotes around therapy - conversion "therapy" is actually a dangerous practice that young people are subject to.)
Myth: Conversion therapy is therapy, and therefore, young people should have access to it.

Fact: Although young people should have access to therapy, conversion therapy is not therapeutic and often leads to negative outcomes for youth and their families. All young people deserve access to ethical, unbiased therapy that helps them figure out who they are without shame.

Conversion therapy is NOT a family value. Banning conversion therapy WILL help keep all families safe.
Myth: Conversion therapy aligns with family values.

Fact: Conversion practices include telling the child that they are LGBTQ because of the wrong-doings of their parents. This can lead to distrust and distance within families.

With conversion therapy bans in place, therapists are still allowed to help a client navigate their sexuality and gender identity, whether that is LGBTQ or straight. Therapists are prevented from forcing someone to believe they can turn straight if they "just try hard enough."
Myth: Laws that ban conversion therapy prevent therapists from helping clients w/ their gender or sexuality & instead encourages therapists to push people to be gay or trans.

Fact: These bans still allow therapists to help their clients figure out their gender & sexuality, whether that is gay, straight, cisgender, or transgender. CT bans prevent therapists from using dangerous, discredited practices that often involve promising young people they can stop being LGBTQ if they try hard enough.
