If someone didn't bring pie, they don't get to participate in the pie bringing event.

Will there be a livestream?

Have you read Foxglove King? I'm part way through the series and loving it.

Mourning those murdered by Hamas isn't incompatible with mourning those murdered by the Israeli state.

Demanding that the hostages return isn't incompatible with naming & demanding an end to genocide.

Naming the power imbalance & impact thereof doesn't desecrate those murdered two years ago today.

So it's just hoods off racism all the way down. Fun...

I'm so confused. I thought Bad Bunny was Puerto Rican, wouldn't that make him American?

Reposted with alt text. Also, from a cursory look, this appears to basically be true, which is pretty funny. Philosophers... debate.

I wonder if future social scientists will think of these survey platforms like we do of the 1950s survey of convenience of their undergrads (80% white male, upper/upper-middle class). 'Sure you got data but I don't think its useful in the way you claim.'

If you go back to the 1950s, there were earnest debates around the world re: whether growing public funding of universities was a Good Thing because government might one day try to dictate what univesities could teach.

By the 90s this was considered laughable.

No one is laughing now.

I assume it's just a list of universities the president has heard of.

That's a good point. Its easy to identify the failures of something in practice with the goals of something in concept and I'm probably doing that with my analogy.

the difference being that in neoliberalism it's a benefit to the government in abstract, and in authoritarianism it's benefit to the specific people in government.

What do ya'll think about this distinction? Any good articles I should read that connect to this?
ndarney.bsky.social
but authoritarianism is when the government puts their thumbs on the scale for specific people/orgs (think of a poker dealer cheating with a player).

In both the expected win is supposed to provide benefits to the government in exchange...

A concept I'm rattling around in my head is how to explain the move from neoliberalism to authoritarianism. I'm considering it as neoliberalism is the government putting their thumbs on the scale for capitalism broadly (think of a casino where even when you win, in general the house wins more)...

Yup. It's hitting a bit different seeing the authoritarian + Christian awfulness in history books vs in the news.

Next they'll start complaining about religious groups who are insufficiently patriotic, and it will start with non-Christian faiths but eventually will include us.

I'm curious about the nusing schools. I wonder if it's a matter of required accreditation curriculum filling so much of the programs.

I think you had shared a screenshot of the card once so I figured you'd be there, but yeah, no one expects the lawyer to have a card.

Lol, no, it's from having seen the previous pokemon movies in the 90s-2000s which lowered my expectations 😅

My wife was amused when I saw your name come up and was "hey, I know that guy... sorta..."

I really liked the movie, now go finish the book so I can read it 😀

Yeah, I finally watched it with my kid last week. It's really good, and I was not expecting that.

A great overview of where postsecondary stands on the TRC recommendations. I especially liked Mark's distinction between Nice Symbolic Things and what was recommend.

Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and so in the blog I join forces with my colleague Mark Solomon to talk about how universities and colleges are doing with respect to TRC. It's a mixed picture.

"As history teaches us" oh? Well as the history of the Mennonites teaches us, this rhetoric is usually two steps before declaring pacifist religions enemies of the state.

I seem to recall an article a decade ago showing that the people who chose a major because it inspired them had better career outcomes than those who picked it because they were told it would be a good career.

I have too much to get done today so I gotta nope out of the news but I will say that someone once said we needed to keep a scoreboard of how often pundits/columnists are absolutely wrong and it should be published with all their future work to give proper context
