Local device discovery is also something I want. Think apps/games like pictochat on the Nintendo DS. These are basically impossible to make because there is no local connection mechanism without internet. I'd expect pushback but I think it's still worth thinking about.

I was thinking CSS pseudos (:module for coloring, :deadzone for brand logos etc) with an escape hatch of canvas (implements CanvasImageSource). The latter loses a lot of the benefits though. The ability to have the UA turn off QR code styling would be beneficial.

QR codes are pretty standard for transmitting small amounts of data. They can be seen many web-based applications especially for tasks like ticketing, payment, customer loyalty ids, pairing devices...
