COME TO OUR CONFERENCE!

Lots of people work on medicines data: researchers; but also "medicines optimisation" teams, using data to directly improve NHS care; and teams who build data tools. These clans rarely meet... Until now! Join us, Dec 10th, in Oxford.

This has been fundamental to Republican ideology literally my entire life as a politically aware entity.

this is not only the crux of RFKs world view but basically everyone in the entire admin. you dont need welfare, youre a failure of your own accord. youre homeless? thats a yp, buddy. you got sick and disabled? sucks to suck, loser.

Oh yes the MAGA folks certainly don’t want that.

i don’t think people on bluesky understand the severity of this situation.

i woke up to literally hundreds of texts from friends and family thinking about either moving back home to india or applying to other countries for jobs. this includes me.

Those on an H1B cannot return to the US from tomorrow (Sunday) unless paying $100K. This is an out-of-the blue presidential action. We’ll see software engineers stranded abroad.

One easy to predict outcome: those on US visas will travel less… for work, for conferences etc.

Disney has lost nearly $4 Billion in three days from combined stock price collapse and cancelled subscriptions.

Unironically this is how I feel most of the time and I don’t even live there anymore.

I’d argue that’s exactly what free speech is.

Trump: "When 97% of the stories are bad about a person, that's no longer free speech."

In addition to being truly a giant in the field, Drummond also is the source for one of my favorite 2 slide transitions I've ever put in a talk. It shows the rapid change in sentiment on clinical trial registration in the early 2000s (in the wake of the Paroxetine scandal).
A quote from a JAMA piece from 2003 in which Drummond Rennie and Kay Dickersin bemoan the lack of knowledge, and therefore action, on clinical trial registration.

“One of the biggest barriers to comprehensive trials registration is the relative obscurity of this issue in the lay and biomedical press…Because there is no new reporting that trials registers exist, there is no written record of it and scientists get the message that their community does not think registers are important.” (2003) A quote from another JAMA paper in 2004 on the widespread awareness of the importance of clinical trial registration.

“Physicians and the public are now well aware of the importance of the registration of clinical trials.”

He is, without a doubt, one of the dumbest and most consistently wrong people I ever have the displeasure of seeing regularly pop up in my feeds.

I'd also like to add, in addition to those things Steve over here mentioned, Mr. Kirk was also armed with literally millions of dollars of backing for his organisation since he was like 17.

Great blog by @ndevito1.bsky.social on his UKRI metascience project, which I’m honoured to join, helping authors share their code to minimum best practice standards with @bmj.com.
When admin is sorted, I will hire a postdoc for the French part of the project... Keep in touch...

An interesting thing indeed considering I just got back from a conference they run on research integrity and peer review.
ndevito1.bsky.social
So @maclomaclee.bsky.social had a slide here saying that only 2 plenaries at this conference ID’d an issue, proposed intervention, randomized and preregistered.

Funny enough I am an author on both. Gotta walk the walk.

We will start with the Douglas G. Altman Lecture, by Malcolm MacLeod (online presentation) - @maclomaclee.bsky.social‬, with "Does the Journal Article Have a Future?"
MM is presenting online, because hard to enter US and out of protest to a hostile environment to scientists.

Not a lawyer but I don’t think that’s a legal authority…

Q: On the Venezuela vessel strike, what legal authority were you guys working under?

JD VANCE: The legal authority is there are people who are bringing -- literal terrorists -- who are bringing deadly drugs into our country

Yet another example of original authors being allowed to say anything they want in replies to critiques unconstrained by verifiable facts.

Reply states we didn’t consider things we explicitly did, and says the original article never said things it explicitly did.

Read Jamie’s thread for details:

This has now been published in PNAS!

The original authors also posted a reply:

Quick thread on some additional thoughts and then I'm probably done talking about this one 🧵

this is genuinely baffling to me. $80k a year to help a professional writer produce one 800-word column a week?

Last chance to participate - this will close on Sunday pm UK time. These results will be used to formulate guidance on demonstrating promise of an intervention when applying for funding for an RCT, pilot, or feasibility trial.
jdwilko.bsky.social
How to demonstrate ‘promise of the intervention’ ahead of an RCT of the intervention? If you’d like to participate in the final round of the Promise Delphi, even if you didn’t do Round 1, then get in touch!

And please, share this widely! We're happy to try and accommodate folks from all over the world the best we can.

We'll be running feedback session on a resource we are creating later this year! If that's something you might like to participate in, let us know here:
