@EcographyJourna We go through a SDM workflow and explain all the tools we can use from various pkgs for each step, highlighting how they can work well in unison. We also use sdmverse to show the main functional groups for SDM pkgs, and give suggestions on where pkg dev should go...

Just back from Minamisanriku on the NE coast where my lab and collabs installed wildlife cameras, microclimate sensors, and sound recorders to monitor biodiversity in beautiful mountain forests. We are all happy, but <exhausted>....

Visited @OISTedu to work with @SamRPJRoss and colleagues on our SHINKA grant research on response diversity of lake plankton communities. Hardly felt like I'd been gone a while, let alone nearly a whole year... Hope to come again soon!

We also found greater temporal mismatch (i.e., lower synchrony) for communities of native and uncertain species in developed areas, but the opposite pattern for confirmed alien species.

But maybe site differences in climate were responsible, or maybe some sites had species that were just more/less variable. We tested these and found 1) no patterns for regional or in situ temp., and 2) the same species were more seasonal in forests and less so in developed areas.

The ant activity time-series include seasonality patterns, but also trends and randomness. So we decomposed the time-series to isolate these components and examined relationships with land-cover change. High seasonality in forest (left) dropped for more developed areas (right).

We sampled >1 million ant workers biweekly for 2 years in varied habitats across Okinawa Island and found that as forest (top) transitioned to more developed areas (bottom), the natural drop in activity during winter seemed to disappear, and community variability also decreased.

The data is from the OKinawa Environmental Observation Network (OKEON), which samples 24 sites across various environments on Okinawa Island. The network also measures soundscapes (birds, insects), monitors mammals with camera traps, and collects arthropods.

Just returned from an excellent time at EAFES 2023 in beautiful Jeju Island, Korea, where ecologists from all over East Asia shared research and began new int'l collaborations. Great experience, looking forward to the next one! @esjoffice @TohokuU_Lifesci
