Combine this with strong *disincentives* for large corporate property holding companies, and greater scrutiny on those clearly inflated costs, and maybe there is light at the end of the tunnel

Instead of giving up something that makes us a uniquely secure republic, the government themselves should be the investor. If individuals cannot buy, they should buy up apartments and let them out at a controlled rent - of course they already do this, but it should be scaled up significantly

We see other countries; Scotland, Germany etc, and think large large companies holding land and letting residential apartments works - and completely miss the point - those countries only have those systems *because* freehold ownership has *never* been in the hands of the population .

Arguably the greatest achievement of Irish patriots was the return of freehold ownership of the land to the population. Ireland is almost unique in this regard. The efforts of Davitt and Parnell are now being cast aside, and the impact will be felt by the people forever

The governments solution, to rely on sales to wealthy foreign investors and faceless companies, is, in the context of Irish history, utterly insane.

Incredibly, the policy of Irish Government, is to incentivise the return of the absentee landlord

This is good news for people who can afford to buy, as there is an incoming increase in supply of second hand houses. But for those reliant on renting, it is a disaster. And government policy (which in this case is strongly supported by opposition) is to blame.
December 11, 2025 at 6:31 AM
In the next few months there will be a report that says that the number of rental properties in the country has taken a sharp *decline*.

Small private landlords are terminating tenancies and selling their houses in droves because of fears over the impact of the new incoming legislation.

Construction costs are at a very high level, but the prices quoted here cannot be a true reflection of cost - you can still build a standalone house for much less than this, and effect is site costs should be less for apartments.

UPDATE: @pixelatedboat.bsky.social has survived the jump with no bone fractures!

He was found lying in a pool of puke outside his ground floor living room window, and is now receiving treatment for severe food poisoning

Really? What is their goal? Ending suffering is my priority. And while I would urge any party to give up armed resistance if it means saving lives, it’s not really that surprising that they don’t trust Israel, is it?

I’ll follow you.

To be honest, I don’t check in here often, but it feels

Thanks Elmo for clearing that up. There was me thinking it had something to do with the people who are destroying all their lands and buildings, blockading their borders, shooting them if the enter the sea, and shooting them when they queue for food

Congratulations, you’ve done your bit by voting for ‘genocide - but with regret’
