I finally drew some very rough sketches of my protagonist, Parsons. The trick was making his snout shorter but I fear he looks too friendly. He should look frightening. He's a big nerd and a good man, but one of his themes is he looks like a monster. #weeknightWriters

Went ahead and wrote something up. Just an interview with him. Honestly this would most likely be an NPC encounter in a tabletop game, but I felt inspired to write this. If you enjoy it please give my other stories a chance, especially Raising the Last Monster.
Sometimes when you talked to them you had to be aggressive. I'll never forget when I had to pin Jack under several tons of metal and wait an hour for him to calm down as he left claw marks all over it. Eventually he was ready to talk, and I had my interview. Sometimes you had to be gentle, polite and most of all kind. It had agreed to this interview out of desperation. A movie was about to be made about it. A movie about its old legend, about what it was, about the killer it was before legends changed and made it what it was today. It hoped I could help. I hoped I could too. It was called Spider Jim. In Jim's case it was created through collective belief. Some creatures were like that, some had more material or literal origins. I didn't know the science or magic behind it. I just knew it was here. It was here, and it had a story. Spider Jim looked at me with its human eye and its many spider eyes on the other side of its head. Its mouth slack, shoulders squared, fidgeting constantly with its hands and its many other legs. According to my studies the first story of its birth was a farmer named Jim. When spiders laid eggs in Jim's ear they hatched they ate Jim's brain and Jim became part spider. Of course that was silly and as people realized that new origins came to be, because you could deny where Jim came from but not that Jim was here. I took out a notebook and began to sketch on one side and take notes on the other. "So, locals call you Spider Jim. Do you have a preffered name? Should I call you a him? They? It?" It rung its hands together nervously, trying to avoid eye contact while trying to make eye contact at the same time. It was hard, with so many eyes. "I like the name one of the kids gave me. Allan, and uh, I'd like to think of myself as a man, thank you?" It was hard to believe Allan was once a cold blooded monster. I wrote all this down. "Alright Allan. It's nice to meet you." I smiled, he didn't smile back. That was okay. The smile was about his c… "What do you think parents are really like, Allan?" Allan began to rock back and forth, a gentle motion. "When I first uh, when I started to change, and help, I remember there was this kid. Mom was mad. Ain't sure why, but she grabbed a bat. Kid was screaming. Heard kids scream like that before but usually only when they saw me. Killed her, uh, ate her skull, I did that back then." He looked down at his hands. Calloused and harsh. He started to examine his less human one, and clean off the little spider legs attached to it, as well as his finger nails. "I'm ashamed to admit I tried to kill the kid too. Was who I was back then. Was what people wanted me to be, but kid got away and didn't realize I was trying to kill him. Told everyone I saved him." His hand reached up, fingers prodding at his teeth as if trying to clean them. It was a bit like when I've wached insects groom themselves. "Other kids heard. I dunno why but I started showing up when parents weren't so great. I think thats how it kind of started." "So, it started with saving children...?" This didn't surprise me. Children could spread stories like no other entity in existence. "That's how the change started, yeah. I was just a killer before that. Crazy spider brain who murdered people. I liked it, back then. It brought me, I dunno, peace? Like I knew my place, like I was exactly what I should be." He looked up at me, his many eyes meeting my own. "I don't want to be that thing again." "I understand. I'll be trying me best to help. So after you saved that child people started to see you differently and you changed, correct?" Allan nodded. "When was the moment you'd say you'd really changed?" He looked at the ground for a moment, hands still together, but less tense now. In a way it was like dealing with a child, or a teenager. Someone coming into their own, just now realizing who they were. You had to be patient. You had to be gentle. Ones like Allan deserved that. "I remember there was a girl." He said. "She fell back out of a car. She was hurt. Not bruised yet, bruises take time to come and she'd just been hit a few times. Screaming. Guy was coming for her. I was there, was in that place a lot back in the day, but not like this. Usually I'd be the one making people scream. Looked at the car, saw a phone, grabbed it and uh, I walked up behind him." He looked up at me, his many eyes focused. "He ran, I didn't chase I uh, I handed her the phone, so she could call as he ran. I didn't leave. I stood there. She didn't say anything and when people arrived I fled." He shrugged and lookled away again. "Found out that moment I liked preventing violence more than I liked causing it, at least, I did back then. I don't know what I'm going to do if people remember what I was." His eyes looked out the window, he looked at his own reflection. It was hard, I knew, looking like he did and trying to think the best of yourself. Some of the creatures, the supernatural ones I talk too, stood no chance of being anything but the monsters they resembled. Especially when your whole existence was based on rumor and legend. "I'm sorry. It must be a lot, knowing what you know." "I am what they want me to be." Allan admitted. "I don't know why they wanted me to murder them, but I'm glad they don't want that now. I'm afraid they'll want that again after that movie." "Movies like that rarely do well." "It doesn't have to do well. It just has to do well enough." I hated to admit he was right. I tapped my pencil on the notebook, thinking. My hand ached as I did so. It always did. Years of scars and injuries, made by a profession no one would believe, created by things that even I wasn't sure existed half the time. Things that should be extinct, things from another world, things from our world that were forgotten, and often wished to be. I closed the notebook and leaned back in my chair. Allan looked at me. There were tears in his eyes. All of them. I didn…

Currently a little obsessed over this comment on my fic. It basically takes my summary (first pic) and borrows words from it then asks a question me, the writer, absolutely know. Are they asking me or just other readers? A part of me wonders if it's a bot.
What do you do when everything you worked for starts to fall apart? When something that's worked for a nearly immeasurable length of time stops working? What do you do when one of the sources of all your trouble lives with you? What do you do when he's innocent? What do you do when he starts to show you kindness and you open up to him in ways you thought you never could? Starting as a joke ship I made to tease my little sister, eventually I started to think about how it would actually work. An uptight authority figure who has known the same way of life for longer then anyone can imagine and one of hell's biggest losers who's suddenly a winner end up bonding in a way neither realized was possible. Meanwhile, behind it all, someone saw a chance for a power grab. A power grab far more dangerous then any of them could imagine. Comments are very welcome, as is any feedback, be it good or bad.
