Microsoft released a new terminal text editor! It's called Microsoft Edit, it's open source, it's tiny (about 250KB Rust binary) and it works cross-platform. They built it for Windows 11 - I've been trying it out on my Mac and it's a nice alternative to Vim or nano simonwillison.net/2025/Jun/21/...

Noticing a trend of Python programmers using “isinstance” as a guard for type checkers to verify the existence of a method or attribute.

Isinstance is VERY slow for negative cases, esp classes with a few layers of inheritance, or mixins.

Today is truly a sad day for the Python community, as we mourn the passing of Michael “voidspace” Foord.

Most people will know him for his mock package (and later stdlib module), but those of us who had the pleasure to meet him… almost all my memories of him are delightfully goofy. 1/2

The really cool thing about github.com/python/cpyth... is how little new C code had to be written. Nowadays CPython's interpreter is generated via a Python script, so the patch is a few hundred lines of Python modifying the interpreter generator, plus several thousand lines of generated C code!
