I'm looking for a driven PhD student to join us at @au.dk and to both generate new paleoclimate data in the lab and work on computational problems to understand climate relationships across timescales.

Get in touch if you'd like to hear more, and apply by Nov 1!

We got the chance to sample Rotsee every two weeks in 2019 thanks to a campaign led by @cindydejonge.bsky.social and benefited from collaboration with researchers at Eawag (Marta Reyes, Nathalie Dubois, Carsten Schubert) and Basel (Dan Nelson)

This is the first publication led by a PhD student from my research group in Basel. It has been really fun working with Toni over the past three years -- stay tuned for some more cool results, including applications to sediment cores, that she currently has in the works

Can we use H isotope offsets among lipids as proxies of algal community composition? New paper led by Antonia Klatt shows that changes with community throughout a year in Rotsee aren similar results from cultures and indicate minimal influence from heterotrophs: doi.org/10.1016/j.gc...

Back in 2019 we screened an obscure lineage of bacteria for a side project and noticed something quite unusual. A quinone, used in cellular electron transport, that looked similar to the type used by plants and algae to perform photosynthesis.

Achieving climate targets is primarily limited by politics, institutions and humans, not technology, solutions or money.

It's values and priorities, about who we are. (1/7)

Sedimentary biomarkers of human presence and taro cultivation reveal early horticulture in Remote Oceania

Lipid biomarkers: novel applications, calibrations and tools for environmental
studies
Lipid biomarkers are valuable tools for reconstructing a variety of environmental processes in modern
and (geological) past settings. We seek studies that develop new lipid biomarkers and methods for
applying biomarkers to modern settings and the geologic past to reconstruct environmental
parameters such as temperature, precipitation, biogeochemical cycles, anthropogenic activities, and
vegetation. These can be studies on the biosynthesis and phylogeny of source organisms, transport and
diagenesis, calibrations to environmental parameters, proxy interpretation and applications to reconstruct past environmental conditions.

It's a wrap! Toni and Theresa have just spent six days carefully sampling sediment cores from lakes Owasco, Neuchatel and Biel for ancient DNA. In the coming months we will see if we find evidence of harmful algal blooms in these systems throughout the past ~12000 years
