Thank you. This film is actually a curse that can only be lifted by passing it on to somebody else. I'm free...

This just transitioned from a cheap, poorly acted commercial back into the film and I genuinely didn't notice.

Tubi apparently got wind of Eight Octopus-films October (that's the official name, now), and recommended Curse of the Kraken (2020). So... #nowwatching Curse of the Kraken (2020). I'm four minutes and 29 seconds in, and this is already the worst film I've ever seen or ever will see. #horrorsky
the poster for curse of the kraken. A kraken is attacking a ship.

Can't argue with that!

I ate them a lot in the UK, but here it's such a minority thing you learn to get by without them. I think it's also a culture war thing - I doubt the meat lobby benefits that much from the renaming stuff, but it's a great stick in the eye to those bloody commie vegans!
nennius.bsky.social
That sounds...unappetising! Fake meats barely exist over here, so luckily we don't have to go through performative renaming ceremonies just yet!

#nowwatching Arachnophobia (1990). They're not octopuses, but they have eight legs! #horrorsky
the poster for arachnophobia. A spider is hanging from a web in front of a full moon over a small town.

Yes! Brilliant idea. I also look forward to the EU parliament legislating that peanut butter be renamed as "roasted legume emulsion", to avoid confusion.

Pressure to ban meat labels for plant-based products comes from Europe's livestock farmers.

It's not the blues explosion, unfortunately. The new band were amazing though, and Jon didn't let up for a second! I can't imagine having that much energy when I'm 60...

I really like Plastic Fang from 2002, and his new album (not with the Blues Explosion) is worth a listen too!

No horror today. Instead, I've got five hours of meetings...followed by Jon Spencer live!

I didn't really post about it! I made a joke about watching octopus films in october, and the joke seems to have gotten away from me.

Handsome James Van Der Beek teams up with some racist fishermen to defend a fishery from a giant squid. Somehow, the film seems to be about childhood trauma? And also about scientific conservation projects destroying communities? Very odd.

Ok, it turns out Octopus-related horror films are pretty thin on the ground, but I've found 7 more. #nowwatching Eye of the Beast (2007), which looks like it was shot on the budget of an episode of Holby City. #horrorsky
The movie poster, showing a big octopus holding a severed torso aloft in its big tentacle.

I already watched one: It Came from Beneath the Sea (1955). My high concept Halloween quest is to watch eight octopus-related horror movies in October. Two down, six to go! I'm planning to watch Octaman, Tentacles, Kraken: Tentacles of the Deep, Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus, Devil Fish, and Octopus.

Not to be mean, but James Van Der Beek simply is not a marine biologist. "James Van Der Beek: Marine Biologist". No.
nennius.bsky.social
Sorry, that should be "Holby Ci+y"

I had so much fun with this. Man, the 90s had such great schlocky monster movies!
nennius.bsky.social
Ok, so these are carnivorous worms, and not octopus-related at all. Bugger. Back to square one.

#nowwatching Deep Rising (1998). Yes. YES! Silly 90s action horror monster gore nonsense! The second of eight octopus-based* horror films I plan to watch for October (this is the concept I've settled on) #horrorsky

*this includes anything that has tentacles, is a tentacle, or looks like a tentacle.
the poster for deep rising. A big eye is looking out from a scaled face.

Maybe I haven't seen enough of them! It was the way Faith Domergue's character was treated. It was almost like the idea of a female scientist was presented as a challenge for a manly soldier man to overcome. And that dinner and dancing scene - gross...

I watched this a few days ago, and even for the 50s it was very sexist. I was genuinely a bit shocked!

#nowwatching The Thing from Another World (1951). So far, this seems like a good idea with average execution. It would be interesting to see this remade by someone with a stronger horror sensibility. #horrorsky
the movie poster, showing screaming men and women. The taglines read "nothing in the world can match its menace" and "it creeps... it crawls... it strikes without warning!"
