Well, that was unsettling. It managed to create a genuinely nightmarish and uncanny atmosphere, but whether that was intentional or just a result of naivety and incompetence is anyone's guess! It almost felt if the film was an avatar for something much more disturbing (I can't explain what I mean).
#nowwatching Malatesta's Carnival of Blood (1973). I had no idea that the famed Italian anarchist theorist Errico Malatesta had made a horror film. I...oh, different Malatesta? Ok, well I'll keep watching it still, I guess. #horrorsky

A horror-comedy that fails badly on both counts. Mantan Moreland raises an occasional smile, and John Carradine does his best with the material. Other than that very little happens as it stumbles boringly towards a rushed conclusion (which, to be fair, contains exactly one effective horror moment).
#nowwatching Revenge of the Zombies (1943), a sequel/remake of King of the Zombies, in which a mad scientist is found to be making undead soldiers for the Third Reich. An unimpressive poverty row production from Monogram, but at least it's another checked off the zombie film list! #horrorsky

#nowwatching The Brain Eaters (1958). 50s teen sci-fi horror trash, which I'm only watching because I'm pretty sure it inspired an excellent song by the Misfits. The poster is great though. #horrorsky

I ended up finishing this today. Basically, the main character's horror stories start to bleed into his life, corrupting his children and relationships. The message seems to be that horror is bad and you shouldn't make or consume it. It's kind of like a crappier version of Fulci's Cat in the Brain.
#nowwatching Deadline (1980). A horror writer goes mad while working on his next novel. This film is properly obscure - I couldn't find any information about it, which is definitely a good sign. #horrorsky

As you get older it's important to keep having experiences and learning new things. For example, today I'm experiencing a weird pain in my hip and learning to favour the other side when I walk.

This was great! Nothing Cronenbergian about it, but a fun action drama with a nice bad guy performance from John Saxon.
#nowwatching Fast Company (1979), a David Cronenberg-helmed action film in which a racing car driver has to reclaim his reputation from a rival. #filmsky

Picked up some new books! A mix of classical sociology, heterodox economics, Marxism, Anarchism, and English Civil War-era proto-socialism. This is all for my day job.

Some nice scenery, a couple of decent shots, and some fairly creative set design. Put that up against an incoherent story, a monster that looks like a cheap Halloween costume, and a family that seem like they're being forced to interact at gunpoint. I have to give it 2 cursed villas out of 5.
#nowwatching The Ogre (1989), another film by Lamberto Bava made for the Brivido Giallo TV series. A family goes on holiday to an Italian castle, which contains remnants of the mother's childhood nightmares. No relation to the Demons franchise. #horrorsky

Well, now I've seen Demons 3 (aka The Church), Demons 3 (aka Black Demons), and Demons 3 (aka The Ogre). If you're only going to watch one Demons 3, I recommend The Church - it's the only one that's actually good and has any resemblance to the Demons series.

As by-the-numbers as they come. A few nice sequences, but mostly boring characters getting killed in unremarkable ways. It was fun watching all the athletes ricocheting around, but sorely lacking as a horror film. I rate it 2 poorly aimed javelins out of 5.
#nowwatching Fatal Games (1984). I've seen all the good slashers. I've seen all the passable slashers. I've even seen a hefty chunk of the bad slashers. And yet, like a dromedary seeking water, I return once again to the dry slasher well... #horrorsky

"if you have seen one film by Wes Craven, for instance, it is safe enough, I think, to skip the others." - noted horror film appreciator Stephen King in Danse Macabre (p.274).

'Shrove Tuesday', a slasher film where people get battered into pancakes.

I like it when my doctor tells me to try and lower my blood pressure. Like, I eat a low-salt vegan diet, exercise daily, lift weights 4x a week, do cardio 2x a week, don't smoke, and drink once a week. What else would you suggest, Captain Medicine?!

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
"This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".

This isn't a great film - I could list the issues with it, but for this kind of production I think it's more important to focus on what it does right. First, it looks great. You wouldn't know it was shot on a phone. It's also decently paced and edited, and you can tell a lot of effort went into it.
#nowwatching The Anger (2025), a high school revenge thriller that was filmed on an iPhone 11. I don't know much about this, but I love a bit of low budget independent filmmaking! #horrorsky

Thanks for liking my post! Unfortunately, a quick scan of your timeline reveals you to be a hard-right xenophobic nationalist who apparently doesn't understand the message of the music we both love. Goodbye!

Youth of Today - Live in Tokyo! One of the best shows I've seen in years. I bumped into Walter and Sammy in a bar after the show too. This isn't the best picture, but in my defense I got kicked in the face just before this. #hardcore #punk

#nowwatching Twins of Evil (1971). A Hammer film featuring vampires and witch hunts, inspired by Sheridan Le Fanu's Carmilla. Peter Cushing is on fine form, embodying puritan fanaticism. There's also an early role for David Warbeck, who went on to star in Italian classics like The Beyond. #horrorsky
