To get original-colored Magearna, you must complete the registration of all Pokémon from Bulbasaur to Eternatus- with at least one living Pokémon per slot- meaning a living dex of 890 Pokémon!

I wanna add a tangent here to say:
Collect as you progress!! (Unless you’re in Pokémon White or White 2, speed run that asap)
Because of doing this, I pretty easily completed my dex in Violet, and got myself a shiny Meloetta to show for it!

One thing I noticed at the beginning was how to obtain regional variants- its much easier to just get the respective game for each region (Alola, Galar, Hisui) than to find them elsewhere.
Ex: Alolan Rattata
It’s much easier to get it in SM:USUM than it is anywhere else at the moment.

I can personally attest to how reliable Scarlet and Violet’s shiny hunting mechanic is- I have almost 100 shinies from my Violet save alone : )

Sword and Shield + DLC’s are required due to Regidrago, Regieleki, Glastrier, Spectrier, and Calyrex- and I mean both games, both DLC’s, cus you can only get one of each regi and horse per save file. Including box legendaries, it’s a must to have both

GO is also necessary for Ghimmigoul(Roaming) and Meltan! You must connect to your Switch in order to access them, but GO, as of writing, is the only way to obtain these two fellas.

Legends: Arceus is necessary for a few new Pokémon, like Hisuian Typhlosion, Overqwil, and Enamorus. It’s also pretty handy to get Landorus, Thunderus, and Tornadus!

Brilliant Diamond/ Shining Pearl were by far the best games to have, as starters and legendaries from past gens are available in the main game, AND you receive two mythicals by having save data from other Pokémon games- a great investment!

Let’s Go: Eevee helped me fill my Kanto Dex pretty easily, but I wouldn’t consider it a must. I only say this because Kanto Pokémon are by far the most commonly included Pokémon in new games- However, SV doesn’t include 52 of them.
