It was a hard two weeks, but I'm finally on my way back home after my fieldwork shift.

Made some new friends, got to catch up with some old ones, and got some good archaeology done.🏺

Some days, the view from the office is just grand.

Experimental archaeology using replicas of "channel rimmed" vessels from fourth-millennium Tepe Gawra, northern Iraq, attest to distillation likely being known at the time, but there is no evidence yet that distilled spirits were produced with them.

This was disappointing. But then I remembered it's mostly trees and moose outside the Avalon Peninsula.

(And some very lovely people, but mostly trees and moose.)

Do the thing, Canada.

There's really only one wrong answer today, but apparently several ways of getting there.

Be smart. Be beautiful. Be courageous. Vote.

It's been a LOT recently. And it can often be hard to stop and notice the good.

Me: Excited to go home to Newfoundland for the #CAA2025 conference.

My Brother, who lives in St. John's: "Dress for it!" and sends this photo...

(Springtime in Newfoundland! Ain't it grand?)

Dang. I thought I was on to something here...

In times like these, any small thing you can wield to banish the darkness is precious, and nostalgia can be a powerful light.

But everything you do that continues to support this smug ghoul is empowering the Enemy and hurting the vulnerable.

Is this who you want to align yourself with? Really?

My sweet barkaeologost, Valkyrie, once had her own excavation kit!

After several years of good use and many squeakendectomies, her tools were retired.

These two pups are sulking as they watch me pack my bag for my next fieldwork shift. They know now that when that specific bag comes out, I'll be leaving for a while.

"Back in my day, when there was scarcity, we'd just up-poles and make the trek to the next seasonal hunting ground. We'd put a travois on old Rover here, which was the style at the time..."

Love this detail. A subtle reminder that it wasn't a rapid switch from mobile hunter-forager-gatherers to sedentary pastoral-agriculturalists.

And who doesn't love a dog in their prehistoric reconstructions!? 🐕

If you have never read the Epic of Gilgamesh, here's a link to an open access edition!

I would also highly recommend (one of the few books I've ever read more than twice) the translation and essays by @sophushelle.bsky.social

I made a Royal Game of Ur board and I sometimes play it in the kitchen. That's kinda the same thing, right? 😆

Hey Canada,

You don't see this in North America much, but it's a pretty familiar emblem overseas. You should get to know it better. Maybe start hanging it around culturally significant locations. For reasons...

A visual indicator the Canucks are preparing for bullshit.

Elbows up, 'nd all that.

It was bad enough letting the infantry talk to you when you're trying to get shit done. 😂

I love my hairy hairy dog.

She's just so dang cute and fancy!

(A little timeline cleanser.)

Definitely the right book.

At the time, the more realistic image maple leaf was popular in Canada.

In the example here from the 1940s, the realistic leaf was used (until the '60s) in the RCAF to differentiate Canadian squadrons from British ones.

The stylized leaf used today became official by royal proclamation in 1965.

If you think America will or won't annex land over a question of "ownership," I have a Manifest Destiny I want you to look into.

Also see: Trail of Tears.

You know what, just look at Western Hemispheric history starting just before 1500 AD.

So people with the capital to do so, are looking to exploit those resources.

But to exploit them, you need to *own* them first.

Why does Trump want Greenland and Canada?

Because that will put the US of A in direct sovereign control of nearly half of the entire Circumpolar North.

Lastly, for the sake of interest...

3. Long before they picked up knitting, the peoples living on Pacific Northwest Coast had a very long history of weaving using materials like cedar bark, but especially prestigious was the blankets they wove from mountain goat and specially bred woolly dogs.
