Some animals secrete ablative oils which make them very heat resistance for a while. Maybe something similar, but inside.

I think the most “fireproof” thing I can think of is the ironfoot snail, which can live in extreme temperatures.. But its not a mammal.

If you had visual effects of heat from were the mutation appears, fever dragon could be pretty neat, since fever is both a reference to heat and sickness.
