Hi! I’m Jessica. I’m a generative designer in the Catskill Mountains. My design studio is Nervous System nervo.us. We create art, jewelry, lamps, + jigsaw puzzles inspired by natural patterns and made w/ code and digital crafts.
I’m obsessed with fungi, lichen, coral and other weird creatures!
Custom cell cycle bracelet which is made by casting a 3D-printed wax in silver Hyphae lamps, like leaves on a tree each is unique. The forms are grown in a leaf vein simulation and 3D-printed in nylon Orbicular Geode puzzle inspired by agate. These are each one of a kind and are lasercut in my studio from plywood Kinematics 3D-printed dress

We have finally released our new puzzle, the Flummoxagon! We've done more tweaking and playtesting on this than any other puzzle, and I think we've managed to make a unique and addictive game. It's turned into something completely different from our original idea

Meet the Flummoxagon, a new geometric puzzle game that might just leave you flummoxed. Imagine a mash-up of Pentominoes and Sudoku. Your goal is to fit all the pieces into the hexagon frame but there’s a twist, pieces of the same color can’t touch. n-e-r-v-o-u-s.com/blog/?p=9827

I realized we hadn't updated our headshots in over a decade. It felt fitting to take new photos inside our own work (also featuring @nervousjesse.bsky.social @nervo.us)

I get that the news cycle is packed right now, but I just heard from a colleague at the Smithsonian that this is fully a GIANT SQUID BEING EATEN BY A SPERM WHALE and it’s possibly the first ever confirmed video according to a friend at NOAA

Honestly I’m not sure. I think it might be ok but you’d need a robust attachment ring. We could make a bigger one. I think that would work better for your use

In this case, it was the customer’s request. Making it a tray puzzle does make shipping more expensive due to the larger size.

I have been play testing our new puzzle which is _NOT_ a jigsaw puzzle. It’s been super fun. How long do you think should an easy puzzle take? What should each one of these sets of tiles be called? Internally we’ve been calling them scenarios but also considered “board” or just “puzzle”

A custom Spectre Tile Gradient jigsaw puzzle. This is a tray puzzle with more than 250 wooden pieces. Should we add this to our product catalog?

Word of the day: boletinoid
Mushrooms having a structure intermediate between gills and pores. As seen in this ash-tree bolete. (I love these) #fungifriends

Our Hyphae lamps are inspired by mycelial networks. Each lamp is unique. We grow them using an algorithm based on how veins form in leaves. We have a few in stock now: n-e-r-v-o-u-s.com/shop/generat... #sciart

My daughter's favorite was the sea stars. We saw Ochre sea stars in purple and orange. But the purple is much more common. Scientists think the colors come from their diet (purple ones eat a lot of mussels) @echinoblog.bsky.social has an article on it: echinoblog.blogspot.com/2010/03/why-...
