The article is rubbish but despite missing the point it did touch on a problem. We need diversity and like STEM it takes ages to fix once you are stuck.

That was a 286 with CGA graphics and a tiny monitor. It was absolutely under 1000 USD equivalent.
As I got older the computers got better and cost more but took about the same chunk out of my salary.
