I contributed a chapter titled "Not Afraid to Show a Savage Face" about the evolution of Andy Cohen's narrative voice from the start of Silkworm through a palpable change in the Touch & Go years. It took a lot of restraint not to spill the beans on this book!

I saw a Ford Galaxie 500 last weekend and did the Leo pointing gif in the car

Now watching John Woo’s Bullet in the Head, which I’d started as a Workout Watch (on mute with music on headphones). The benefits of a normal viewing are clear: the introductory montage of wayward youth antics reminiscent of Rebel Without a Cause is set to a zany sax cover of “I’m a Believer.”

I’ve seen 21/38 films in Criterion Channel’s Hong Kong Action Classics. May not get through all of the unwatched titles, but I started with Sammo Hung’s Pedicab Driver.

It’s all over the place tonally: ribald farce, serious romantic drama, lessons on Respecting Women, friendship hijinks.

22 seconds faster per mile. Not quite up to my fastest times (although I was in that range for miles two and three), but I’m happy with it.

It’s twenty degrees cooler than Monday, time to see if I run faster or if I’m still recovering from my cold

Hecker, Tim - Shards

Watching Dracula (1931) for the first time, although it doesn’t feel that way because of all the other Draculas and Nosferatus I’ve seen. Dwight Frye goes all out as Renfield, but this is Bela Lugosi’s picture, and it’s exponentially better when he’s on screen.

I didn’t think people actually confused Bill Paxton and Bill Pullman, but this MLB announcer just did

I’ve only heard good things about its quality but yeah that’s a hard cinematic experience to choose right now.

I got halfway into a recap of the two Silkworm shows I attended and it was trending towards a 50/50 split between “I finally got to see one of my favorite bands” and a meditation on mortality. I genuinely don’t know if people want to read the latter!

Next up was Ringo Lam’s Prison on Fire. While there are some wild brawls (especially the one at the end), it’s more of a drama than an action film. That’s not a complaint! Chow Yun-fat is especially good as an initially inscrutable but soon tremendously loyal friend of Tony Leung Ka-fai’s lead.

I’m most excited to see a few of John Woo’s prime-era films (Bullet to the Head, Heroes Shed No Tears) and go further into Ringo Lam’s On Fire Verse with School on Fire and Prison on Fire 1 + 2, supplementing City on Fire (which I just picked up on 4K).

I don’t know if it pulls off the transition into tragedy in the third act, but at least three long fight sequences have astounding choreography. Sammo Hung is a total marvel, and there are a half-dozen familiar faces from other Hong Kong films. Always happy to see Lam Ching-ying, AKA Mr. Vampire.
