The People Some people have begun to come into my dreams from a long way away, traveling over the mountain passes that nobody living knows. Old people who smell like fog and the soft bark of redwoods. They talk together softly. They know more than I know. I think they come from home.

Today’s poem is by Natasha Rao, from her book, Latitude. Discovered in the library this afternoon. What a perk to be able to browse for gems almost whenever I feel like it!
Fullness and Hunger My father orders the crab croquet and I am quick to correct croquette for the white waiter pouring water coquettishly. Last summer in England I watched my brother grip a mallet on the manicured lawn of his new life while my parents learned the rules to this ballet, beaming, and I sipped gin. My father's face when he hit the ball through the wicket. My father's face now. The slipped grin. My father's face in my face. I can be wicked, I begin to say, but it sounds like crickets, it sounds like nothing at all, though both our mouths are moving.

This morning at the library where I work I pulled a book at random from the poetry section and flipped it open to this by Dana Levin:
2016: A BIOGRAPHY I had wanted to think that America was incidental, that I could go on with the same lyric project, to lament the soul in exile, having to endure the jail of the body, what was a president to me.
