#BOTD author Charlotte Riddell. A prolific Victorian novelist, she published more than 56 books and a literary journal. She wrote 5 supernatural novels (and many shorts), managing to find new ways to approach the haunted house story. Works include Fairy Water and The Nun’s Curse. #books #ghosts

#BOTD Elizabeth Gaskell. Known for her novels about the Victorian industrial age, like North & South and Cranford, Gaskell wrote many supernatural tales, using her realistic style to slowly pull the rug out from under her readers. Classic tales include The Old Nurse’s Tale, and The Squire’s Story.

#BOTD author Violet Hunt. Her parents were members of the Pre-Raphaelite group & she’d become influential as a leading suffragette. She hosted literary salons & pursued affairs with H.G. Wells, Maugham, and Ford Maddox Ford. She wrote 2 collections of ‘Tales of Unease’ which were much acclaimed.

Dover’s western cliffs also have the remains of what’s thought to be a Knights Templar Church. It was discovered in 1806 during construction of the Western Heights fortifications. It’s layout mirrors the New Temple Church in London albeit on a smaller scale. #history #archeology

While Dover Castle, on the eastern cliff of Dover, is a cared for tourist location, the fortifications on the western cliffs have largely been left to nature. These shots are from the Drop Redoubt, a 19th century fort dug deep into the cliff, surrounded by an empty moat. #castle #abandoned

Dover Castle has amongst its walls a Roman lighthouse, the tallest and most complete standing Roman structure in Britain. Possibly its oldest too. Parts of its survival is due to its conversion into a belfry for the adjacent church. #history #roman

Scenes from Dover #Castle, the so called ‘key to England’ if you’re planning on an invasion. A fort has stood here from the 11th century – though Roman structures pre-exist even the 1st fortification. It has been extended & redeveloped consistently as a military structure right up until the 1970s.

#BOTD Lady Cynthia Asquith. Asquith wrote a well-regarded horror collection This Mortal Coil, but had the greater impact as an anthologist. The Ghost Book was the first literary collection of ghost stories, collecting writers like Arthur Machen, Oliver Onions & Algernon Blackwood.

Designed by artist Ioan Bolborea, the Căruţa cu paiaţe / The Cart with Clowns is commonly called the Caragealiana as it’s in tribute to playwright Luca Caragiale & features 16 figures from his works

If you walk the White Cliffs of Dover, you can also visit the Fan Bay Deep Shelter. Built in a matter of months in the 1940s, they were to store artillery and provide accommodation for 190 soldiers who manned gun positions along the coast. Today they also provide access to two WW1 era sound mirrors.
