I was going to reply with an example of a bad adaptation that damaged the reputation of the original, but I can't think of one. I was assuming that was a reasonable concern, but I might be wrong that it's even a risk!

And honestly, if I was making a list of great late-20th-century comic strips? Garfield would have to be on there in addition to Calvin & Hobbes.

Like, I agree you put your reputation somewhat at risk when you allow adaptations, but it usually works out fine, and sometimes works out really well. Like, nobody hates Peanuts because they saw A Charlie Brown Christmas.
