I was going to reply with an example of a bad adaptation that damaged the reputation of the original, but I can't think of one. I was assuming that was a reasonable concern, but I might be wrong that it's even a risk!

Like, I agree you put your reputation somewhat at risk when you allow adaptations, but it usually works out fine, and sometimes works out really well. Like, nobody hates Peanuts because they saw A Charlie Brown Christmas.

I'm fond of "can't travel before time of invention" myself. I like the image of someone turning on their prototype to test it and a tour group walks out.
