Teenage alcohol consumption is in decline in many Western countries. However, is alcohol harm among young people also falling?

In our latest blog, Emma Vieira of Australia's National Drug Research Institute explains the findings of her systematic review.

It is hard to say at this stage what impact the policy had on alcohol attributable deaths. But publicly available data does seem to suggest the NT was bucking the rising trend seen in the rest of Australia. We will see if this trend persists.

The policy itself was clearly targeted at reducing cask wine consumption, which has remained at a reduced level to this day. I suspect a reversal of this trend will likely be the first clear change.

The Northern Territory has officially removed their MUP. It is hard to say exactly what will happen from here. There will likely be a rise in alcohol-related harm, but the magnitude is hard to estimate. When introduced the policy covered roughly 20% of the market, inflation has likely reduced that.
