Also, 2/3 of people think that the public have hardly any or no influence at the national level.
niceonecombo.bsky.social
Today's Privilege & Participation Survey variable is a stalwart of political behaviour research: External Political Efficacy.

Takeaway: People think they have less influence as they move from the local to the national level.

This is probably my favourite variable in the dataset (yes, I have a favourite variable).

Worth noting that, at the time of the survey, about 1/3 of MPs were privately educated, which was still 5 TIMES the rate in the population.

Still, people overestimated even that figure!

Happy Monday morning!

Here's the final Privilege & Participation Survey variable on political or civic participation (blurred line!): Religious Involvement.

Takeaway: The data measures MANY facets of religious involvement.

...survey respondents being disproportionately politically active.
Second, this is old data. The most recent general election at the time was 2010. A lot has changed but, to my knowledge, there's no other data that covers all the concepts in this data in so much detail.

Today's Privilege & Participation Survey variable is the bread and butter of political behaviour research: Past Vote.

How do non-participants RANK the reasons for their disengagement?

Privilege & Participation Survey data can help here too:

privilegeandparticipation.org/2021/06/21/s...

Takeaway: Quite flat distribution of mean rankings but lack of confidence, skills and money are top.

I analysed reasons for non-participationin more detail, alongside the reasons that MPs and activists give for why people might not participate, in a recent @johnsmithcentre.com blog:

What about non-participants?

An important feature of the Privilege & Participation Survey is its question on reasons for not partipating:

Takeaway: Lack of time and money (+confidence) are most selected by non-participants.

Average annual household energy bill hits £1,755.

£4.43bn energy debt, people can't afford it.

Since 2020 big energy companies made £514bn operating profit.

128000 a year die in fuel poverty

Profiteering fuels inflation, poverty.

Can't rebuild economy without ending profiteering.
Energy price cap warning as latest rise takes effect
The energy price cap remains vulnerable to gas price shocks and rising costs including green energy investment but households are being told they can still shield themselves from fluctuations ahead.

The survey question was an open text box, asking people to name all the organisations that they support.

I manually coded the answers into categories. Again, this was time-consuming!

Note: People could list as many organisations as they wanted, so the percentages are of all organisations listed.

Moving on from how people support organisations, here's the Privilege & Participation Survey data on the types of organisations supported:
