“In the future, people will look back and thank John Gibbons for what he has done for Irish farmers, just like his father before him”.

Very positive review of THE LIE OF THE LAND in current edition of Village magazine by former Green Party leader, Eamon Ryan.

All Greece hates…
… God’s daughter, born of love

Helen by H.D.
(No one does alienation — from society & circumstance — like H.D. Calm distant fire)
#poetrysunday
All Greece hates
the still eyes in the white face, the lustre as of olives where she stands,
and the white hands.
All Greece reviles
the wan face when she smiles, hating it deeper still
when it grows wan and white, remembering past enchantments and past ills.
Greece sees unmoved,
God's daughter, born of love, the beauty of cool feet and slenderest knees,
could love indeed the maid, only if she were laid, white ash amid funereal cypresses.

In this NYT review, Jacob Heilbrunn is writing about the past, but could be writing about the Stephen Miller present: "Goebbels had good reason to believe that American bigotry could be exploited for Nazi gain." The spirit of Goebbels stalks the halls of the White House today, and his image.

Claus Offe was a major thinker who influenced many disciplines. I was privileged to hear him speak once. A very sad loss

Just got back from a family trip to Riga, and came back with some artists I now really like a lot: Janis Rozentāls (1866-1916) and Sigismunds Vidbergs (1890-1970).

One of genealogies of Media Studies is that many early methods began as advocacy strategies of 1940s media reform, in the attempt to change broadcast regulation to allow for more educational channels. Put differently, Media Studies originated as a research movement to build US Public Media.

If Arthedain had decisively beaten all the other kingdoms in the north in Third Age 1600 that would be about the equivalent. It made France the leading country in Europe.

I’m always game to follow the data in publishing, and so grateful when the smartest folks (like @tajjaisen.bsky.social) want to hop in the weeds with me. A brilliant piece of reporting.

I spent the summer reporting this essay on why it seems harder than ever to sell a book right now—especially if it isn't a debut and comes with the dreaded "sales track." I'm grateful to the writers, agents, editors, publishers & experts who spoke to me for this piece: thewalrus.ca/the-publishi...
