A difficult day of remembrance today. Sometimes, I feel the October 7th massacre--the deadliest day in Jewish history since the Holocaust, when over 1200 people were killed, mostly civilians, mostly young progressives at a music festival and on a kibbutz--gets forgotten in the larger discussion about the war in Gaza. So, even as I continue to hope for a lasting peace, I remember the victims today.

The anniversary also falls on Sukkot this year, a holiday that commemorates the Israelites' 40 years of travel through the wilderness after their liberation from slavery in Egypt and before they reached the Promised Land. I think a lot of us Jews feel like we're lost in the wilderness right now when we see news story after news story of vandalism and deadly attacks against Jews and Jewish institutions all over the world while our friends stay silent, or worse, imply that it's okay because of the war.

But still, I hope this latest peace plan is the one that sticks, I hope the remaining hostages come home, and I hope there will be a lasting peace in my lifetime.
