It’s sad how we seem to just keep repeating these cycles, with people giving in to hate and bigotry at the prompting of craven narcissists, leading to chaos and epic violence until they realize too late the suffering and brutality will come for them too

Hastings also does a great job showing how so much of Europe initially embraced Hitler, even in countries that were occupied, like France. So many soldiers from occupied lands enthusiastically supported Nazism until it became clear they were going to lose the war
