I can’t help thinking that, if a key requires a plant to have its roots examined, there’ll be many people feeling justified to dig it up without permission.
Out of interest, which Epilobiums are separated out by root features? Curious to see if there are any taxa we also have here.

Wife and I climbed Adam’s Peak in Sri Lanka at midnight to see sunrise from the summit.
Reckon there we no more than a dozen white faces that night passing about 5,000 native people descending it. Almost every single one smiled, saying “Hello, Where are you from, What’s your name.”

You probably didn’t buy the F1 variety Coeur de Boeuf which is genetically engineered and is literally a chimaera of Solanum and Bos.
But do watch out for the seeds though, all of which have little sharp t horns on them.

Oh, that’s surprising for Epilobium spp. Offhand, I can’t remember any keys in Stace’s Flora of the British Isles requiring root analysis. But our laws do make it illegal to uproot any plant without the landowner’s permission.
