Radicalised by an ebike; car-free family in Melbourne. Trying to change the world one council survey at a time
We're expecting some very high tides again today, which means the Moonee Ponds trail might be flooded this afternoon @bikewest.org @merri-bekbug.bsky.social

On a work trip to Shepparton and rather than hire a car, we took the train. Such a civilized way to travel!

New bike lane on Williams/Franklin Street, very nice! Slowly filling in the gaps...

The new bike bridge over Footscray road is open, i love it! It's a pity about the price tag of the $10B freeway, but you've got to take what you can get

Ride2School and instrumental music day, yessss
March 21, 2025 at 6:35 AM
Wow, an amazing Ride2School day this morning! Big thanks to Bicycle Network and the Yarra council. The kids and parents were really excited. I'm doing a 'hands up' count this arvo, expecting high numbers of riders. Once we know how many kids are *able* to ride, we can aim for that amount every day

Shout-out to Bicycle Network for the excellent bike parking at the Melbourne GP!

Sydney road Street party setup and takeover. No through traffic, no parking, going to be a disaster for local businesses!

Riding to Preston market, up St Georges road. All bike paths should be this wide #melbourne #bike

Looking at how to get from one side of Brunswick to another, car: 8 min, PT ~30 min ($10 pp return), bike 13 min - free, no parking, but there's no continuous safe, protected bike paths. Until the council and DoT prioritise non-car travel, those 2-5 km trips are going to be easier by car ☹️

I bought a $50 bike for those times when you need to lock it somewhere for a few days (i.e hirecar place), but already really attached to it! A classic Malvern Star. Judging by the pressed metal chain rings it's likely lower-end but it still rides beautifully, and looks 😍. Gonna need a crappier bike

Google map cycling directions do not use the Upfield bike path. Annoying for people who know where to go (and, say, want to check trip times), dangerous for inexperienced riders or those new to the area.

Starting the year with a 25km schlep home from a friend's NYE party. Not too hard with an ebike, I enjoyed it, got home feeling refreshed, but maybe a bit far to ride for most people as a form of mass transportation. Melbourne is quite big at times... #bikemelbourne

Catching the punt from Port Melbourne to Spotswood, on our way to Williamstown from Brunswick. A 17km/1hr trip each way for a family picnic, quite long but do-able with an ebike and good bike lanes (or, you know, whatever the frick counts for bike infrastructure on Lorimer st)

I'm a big fan of the front bike crate, I've opted for the Basil 50L. Stopped at Mediterranean Wholesalers and bought too much delish food? No plastic bag, box, straight to the crate.

This is much nicer, the shade is a huge bonus

60km... "bike lane" (paint). This should be illegal.

This lane in Brunswick has been planted with natives, beautiful #melbourne (also... a street with no cars, so nice)

I friggin love riding down Canning Street! Unfortunately it's not in my usual route to work anymore, but I'll take any opportunity #bikemelbourne or #melbournebike?

The biggest pot at Ceres, 60 litres of potting mix and a couple of ferns. I did have to leave my son and come back for him, even i have limits #cargobike #melbourne

some street design in #melbourne. Honestly, who designs and approves this stuff?? Someone who knows that painted bike lanes are just car-door buffers and since there's no parking, you don't need buffers.
