Aw man that sucks :( I definitely know the feeling, some of my players ordered their books after we started our campaign and still received them before I got my BackerKit pledge!

Many important lessons learned either way! Would be nice to get the crew together again for something, but scheduling always seems to have it out for us.

I was a younger and much more foolhardy DM back then. I knew not the things I did, nor the severity of their impact on the group.

When the players understand the rules and the stakes and they talk about how they should engage, what will happen if they don't, what they're willing to give up to stop this person...that's the game, folks. That is TTRPG magic and it is what sits me in the Director's chair week after week. 5/5

Facing a battle where the outcome is uncertain, TRULY uncertain, is unique to TTRPG stories. There's no meta-sense of "well this book has a whole 100 pages left, surely the Heroes don't die here" or "well I haven't beat that boss but the credits haven't rolled yet so clearly I'm meant to win". 4/

But assuming the players are familiar with how Recoveries work and chose to initiate combat while low on both Stamina and Recoveries...I think the opposite. If the rules were made clear, relaxing them to increase the likelihood of a Hero victory can be severely damaging to narrative tension. 3/

Obvious things obvious: if this player is brand new to the system and isn't familiar with the Recovery system, I think the Director is courtesy-bound to remind them of it and even encourage them to use it before a dangerous fight. To me, that's it. All there, black and white, clear as crystal. 2/
