The company was gathering and organizing a great talent base and had a great number of resources behind it. I mean, those are the two elements you have to have if you want to start a major promotion."

Dr. Britt Baker was the first female signed to the company. "I just hopped on board and said, 'Let's do this and let's make some noise, she remembered.

A rally and press conference took place January 8 at the home of the Jacksonville Jaguars, TIAA Bank Field (later EverBank Stadium). As the world watched on YouTube, the internet buzzed with the names the new organization had signed, including Baker, SoCal Uncensored, Page, PAC, "Jungle Boy" Jack Perry, and MJF.

MJF told the crowd that he was the fastest rising star in pro wrestling. He also said that he'd been excited to attend the rally until he found out that the event was taking place in Jacksonville. The fans booed loudly. "That was my job," he recounted, "to go out there and make the people hate me."

When the Jaguars' mascot was introduced amid a pyrotechnic display, MJF demanded that the accompanying music be cut. He then complained that attendees were cheering the mascot while booing him.

That's when the mascot made a throat slashing gesture, attacked Friedman from behind, and revealed himself to be Joey Janela, an incredibly popular indie star, particularly in his home state of New Jersey.

In a forerunner of what would become known as the Forbidden Door-the working relationship between AEW and promotions all over the world-the company announced that it planned to use talent from a league called Oriental Wrestling Entertainment (OWE) in China, a country where pro wrestling had experienced little success.

Spectators were overjoyed. But there was still more to come.

Just before the event concluded, the company made a surprise announcement: international superstar Chris Jericho had made the decision to become All Elite.

Khan had quietly arranged for Jericho to fly to Jacksonville via private plane. "As we were pushing the marketability of AEW, we came at it in different ways, Harrington said. "Number one was we had youth. Number two was we had some great, uncharted talent who'd never been seen by an American television audience. And number three was we had to have some big, established names. And none of them was bigger than Chris Jericho."
In Jacksonville, Jericho was hidden in a room while the other wrestlers were introduced. "Not even the wrestlers knew I was there. Then, at the very end, I walked out in front of the crowd, and I could see they were shocked. A lot of people felt that if Chris Jericho was involved, this company had to have some merit behind it?
MJF remembered being as stunned as everyone else: "After I did my thing, I walked through the curtain, and I'm nose to nose with Chris Jericho-a first-ballot Hall of Famer. I don't even remember what noise came out of my mouth. I was so confused."
After decades of playing a dominant in-ring role in North America and Europe, Jericho had begun working for New Japan in 2017, where he engaged in a thrilling series of matches with such names as Kazuchika Okada, Hiroshi Tanahashi, and Tetsuya Naito. But his most memorable clash occurred at Wrestle Kingdom 12 against fellow Canadian Kenny Omega.
"If there was no AEW, I might not even be in wrestling anymore," he said. "But while I was working in Japan, the winds of AEW started blowing and made me realize that maybe there was a lot more that I could do in the wrestling business."
Of all the greats with whom Khan wished to work, Jericho was near the top of the list-in no small part because, as a child, Tony's father had taken him to an ECW show to watch the legend.
"That was my last match in ECW," Jericho said. "I wrestled Too Cold Scorpio, and he came down on me with the shooting star press for the finish, and kind of elbowed me In the face on the way down. And if you look at the tape, as he's covering me, you see a young Tony Khan with glasses & a Taz shirt. "I think the lesson of that is to always put one thousand percent into everything you do. You never know who's watching."
Khan had ended up at the ECW event under unusual circumstances, after his parents asked him to take an admissions test to one of the most academically rigorous schools in the United States. "I hadn't agreed to go there," he said. "I just took the test"
But when he passed and was admitted, "they flipped it around on me and said, 'You have to go! And I didn't really want to go. None of my friends were going there. We were in a McDonald's parking lot, and I got mad at them. I said, "We never agreed to this. You lied to me! And so my father said, 'Think of the one thing you really want to do, and we'll do it for you!"
From the rec.sport.pro-wrestling Usenet group, Khan knew about a weekend that would feature a fan gathering and an ECW show. "So I said I wanted to be part of that fan weekend and they said yes. That's why, if you ever look at the footage, you'll see my father standing next to me."
Over the years, Khan not only monitored Jericho's career closely but made it a point to build a dialogue with the star before AEW began.
On the night of All In, for instance, Jericho & his band, Fozzy, were scheduled to play a concert in Kansas City. Fans who knew this were shocked when Jericho turned up at the Chicago-area show, dressed as Penta of the Lucha Brothers, then attacked Omega by delivering a Codebreaker. "The only way Jericho was going to get to the concert was if he had a private plane," Khan said. "So I was the one who flew him back & forth to All In that night."
After months of discussions, it was in Jacksonville, on the day of the rally, that Jericho officially signed his AEW contract.
The AEW family had seen the company go through highs & suffer through challenges. But the success of All In made it all feel worth it. Besides breaking records, the show embodied a philosophy of always presenting a product that was nothing less than All Elite. In a five-year span, "Tony's dream became our dream," said Remsburg.
Allin said that the company's short history is the story of the creative "magic" that can take place in an environment without limitations.
"The human experience is about feeling the whole range of emotions," said Nightingale. "And to be able to have that visceral experience and see the journey of life reflected through such an aggressive form of art, in my opinion, is true beauty."
With each television broadcast and special event, AEW continues to rewrite and redefine the legacy of the squared circle. "And remember, we're still growing," noted Kingston. "So just hold on for the ride."
It's an expedition that shows no signs of slowing. "I love the history of wrestling and the history of AEW," Khan said, reflecting on what will be regarded as the formative years of the promotion. "It's fun looking at and examining and thinking about. But I'm also always thinking about where professional wrestling is going. And that's why AEW keeps looking forward."

the AEW World Championship. MJF closely monitored the title picture as Moxley regained the gold. This time, the victory came at the expense of his BCC partner Danielson in a tournament final at the second annual Grand Slam on September 21.
But MJF kept his eye on the champ, and it would only be a matter of time before The Devil cashed in.
Caster and MJF had trained together on Long Island, and, despite what was said publicly, each was gratified by the other's success. While Friedman used Grand Slam to line himself up for a championship run, the Acclaimed enjoyed their own hometown triumph by finally beating Swerve in Our Glory for the tag team straps.
Said Caster, "The fans were pushing so hard for us, we had to give them their wish."
MJF asserted that the win reinforced AEW's stature as "a listening company. The people's voice is important. In AEW, you don't get the title without the people."
