You may well be right that they prefer Ukraine to the alternative. But there is also a large Russian-speaking population who don't necessarily share their views.

No, but I don't really recognise it as Ukrainian either. Before ethnic cleansing to establish it as a Russian outlet to the Black Sea, it was essentially Tatar and Muslim. Very little Ukrainian influence till the 1950s.
