I’m a hiker, conservation biologist and social scientist, and very tired artist with chronic illness. I post about my wanderings, work, and general thoughts about the world.
It is surreal, immersing is US history while also… unfortunately… living through a period of such uncertainty, danger, and embarrassment. I hope we can find our way forward from this moment to something better.

I’m currently reading a book about Colorado history and I’m learning about the hidden stories of black women here. People who didn’t give up on seeking what’s right and caring for their families all the while. On this MLK day, I’m feeling gratitude for all the progress they made.

This photo was taken in 1911 using glass plate technology by Herbert Ponting who was part of Scott's Antarctic expedition,

The composition and detail are exquisite with the band of white snow/ice creating a perfect frame around the two people and the ship in the distance

Iconic imo

Thinking today about how our world is constantly changing.

Calm day on the shore of Lake Erie. On a day like this one, it’s easy to forget how dangerous these lakes can be. #kelleysisland

These are the glacial grooves of Kelleys Island in Lake Erie. They tell a quiet story of the ancient history of this place. #kelleysisland #thegreatlakes

For the next few weeks, I’m mentally traveling back to the islands of Lake Erie. This is the ferry to Kelley’s Island in April of 2024. You can see the whole island in the distance. #thegreatlakes #kelleysisland

Winter weather made it so I could walk around downtown Estes for the first time. They have some great little shops!

Happy Winter Solstice. I’m excited to be in this special place of rest and visioning between years.

My little backyard friend. I donated both of my Halloween pumpkins to this dude. They just finished eating them as of last week! I hope it helps get you through the winter, little friend.

Mochi’s feathers were making a little bow tie that I was very proud of. But he didn’t like me taking his picture. He is very concerned.

I’m really grateful for another ride around the sun. Each year, I come more into my own and slowly, I uncover who I am and who I want to be. Year 36 was all about love - grief, prioritizing loved ones, balancing passions, working on loving myself, connecting with the ancestors.

I love this little bird so much. It’s really hard that people don’t always understand that, especially as we went from thinking he was healthy this summer to not knowing how much longer we will have him with us. Everyday with Kiwi is a blessing, & it’s stressful to have the end looming.

So, I think I have some emotional baggage around winter now. My body is holding this sense of dread and exhaustion. I definitely believe that finding a real community here would help, but between doing too much and being an introvert- it feels insurmountable. #winterblues #introvertstruggle

#phoenixsummitchallenge this year was a real joy to be a part of. I did my shortest mileage yet but got to hike with friends and family, and reminded myself that I can still do this! #hikemoreworryless

As an American with with chronic illness, I’m scared. But I have reminded myself that despite the old adage- health is not everything. I am more than my health and my body. (But also, universal healthcare now! It’s cheaper & has better ROI than the billionaires that we are bankrolling).

Last night, I was remembering my first bird. She taught me so much- not only about friendships with these amazing creatures, but about strength and bravery. Now I believe that she watches over my flock on the other side. <3 you Beedea.
