Many people desperately wanted to see Starmer's LPC speech as a new direction on immigration and asylum. Yet, we clearly see a continuation of an approach that basically says Farage is right on policy but morally wrong. Others have tried it, it won't work.

Starmer to end asylum ‘golden ticket’ of resettlement and family reunion rights
People granted asylum will have to earn right to invite family in plan charities call ‘straight from populist playbook’

A healing article to which I am extremely grateful. Check it out especially if you are interested in how revolutions stay with us even after disengagement and if you want to know how revolutionaries in Egypt try to stay committed to the values that mobilized them one day.

I’m thrilled to announce the publication of my latest article in Middle East Critique:

Yesterday marked 8 years since the late Sarah Hegazi raised the rainbow flag at a Mashrou' Leila concert in a moment of uncalculated joy so threatening to Egyptian authorities that they arrested, tortured, prosecuted her, and sent her to exile.

Sarah in my heart today. 🌈

People in palestine are bracing for greater crackdown as Israel punishes them for statehood recognition by UK, Canada, & Australia.

As I, and many others, have pointed out - these proclamations of recognition do nothing to stop the violence.

Finally, finally, Alaa will be freed. Nobody will give him back those stolen years, and there's still thousands like him rotting in Egyptian jails forgotten by the world.

Nevertheless, this is a moment to celebrate. And it gives me hope that one day they will have to #FreeThemAll!

Today's decision is, in many ways, a long-awaited course correction. Alaa should have never been arrested, prosecuted, and sentenced for his free expression in the first place. And when he completed his most recent prison term last year, he should have been promptly released.

As a result of today's pardon, Alaa will finally be able to go home. He will be able to watch his son Khaled grow, reunite with his sisters Sanaa and Mona, and heal the heart of his mother who spent nearly 300 days on hunger strike to secure his release.

For that, we celebrate.

September 22nd, 2025 - Alaa will be free!
nihadaboud.bsky.social
It is mid-September and I haven’t made it yet! Was it a far fetched goal? I wonder if in my work emails had really high stakes or life and death consequences… what would I do then??
nihadaboud.bsky.social
Hopefully by the end of 2025, I will draft emails in less than 30-40 mns, say 20 or something #baby_steps

So uh there's a lot going on today. But I wrote this icct.nl/publication/...

Did you know the US has added 12 *criminal groups* to the Foreign Terrorist Organization list this year? There were zero such FTOs last year.

For decades, US allies have copied US terrorist designations. Not this year.
The end of US-led global counter-terrorism? Changing trends in terrorist designation
Global counter-terrorism is fundamentally changing, as is evident in recent patterns of terrorist designation. For decades, the US Foreign Terrorist Organisation (FTO) list has been a bellwether of co...

If at #APSA2025 don’t to miss the Climate and Conflict panel, Friday at 8 am. My amazing co-authors, Natalie Ayers, Laura Saavedra-Lux and Blair Welsh will be presenting our paper “After Rebel Rule”, examining how rebel occupation affects agricultural recovery after conflict. It is a great panel!

The National Council for Human Rights in Egypt has petitioned for the release of Alaa Abdel Fatah, among others. Sisi asked the relevant authorities to examine the petition! Extremely cautious hope! #FreeAlaa
