Also, maybe the existing surveillance state actually isn't fine at all? Maybe it sucks and we just can't do anything about it! That's not a reason to make it even worse.

Ah, yes, that well-known slogan, "anti-ICE". That thing everyone is saying.

The study the economist is mangling was of a subset of trans youth who had socially transitioned no later than the age of 12, with parental support. 87% of them got puberty blockers, hormones, or both, and only 3% stopped:

Why are you fearmongering about "nearly a fifth" of the group when the study in question shows that 87% of the trans kids studied began some sort of medical treatment, and only 3% stopped?
Puberty blockers suppress the physiological changes brought on by endogenous puberty, while gender‐affirming hormones cause the development of secondary sex characteristics associated with the other binary gender (e.g., facial hair growth in transgender boys, breast development in transgender girls). The majority of youths in the Recruited as Transgender group started puberty blockers (86%) and/or gender‐affirming hormones (68%) at some point during the study. Within the Recruited as Transgender group, 16% started blockers and continue to use them without having begun gender affirming hormones, and 66% started both blockers and gender‐affirming hormones and continue to use gender‐affirming hormones (roughly one‐third of these youths have stopped using blockers). The remaining youths who medically transitioned started blockers and then stopped (1%), started blockers and gender‐affirming hormones and stopped both (1%), started blockers and gender‐affirming hormones but stopped the latter (1%), or never started blockers but started hormones (1%). The mean age at which youths in our sample began blockers was 11.18 years (SD = 1.15, range: 8–14.5 years), and the mean age at which they began taking gender‐affirming hormones was 13.21 years (SD = .99, range: 10.5–16 years). More details about this sample's experiences with gender affirming medical care are reported in Olson et al. (2024).

Lee, I did *not* need to get a notification on my phone starting with the words "Wes Streeting wants to be friends" today. Nearly gave me a heart attack.

One explanatory note was dismissed with words to the effect of "the government wouldn't have said that if they'd thought it through as carefully as we did", which is just mind-blowing hubris.

The analogy doesn't even work on its own terms. The guillotine was invented as a more reliable, humane alternative to beheading by axe, which was often quite hit and miss. It could take several swings of the axe to actually finish the job. Why would anyone regret a less painful death?

There are many, many things for which an apology is an appropriate, sufficient, and laudable response. Advocating for mass murder is, uh, not one of them.
