Thanks to the tireless work of the BC Extortion Task Force and local police agencies, investigators are turning intelligence into arrests - and arrests into charges.

These are complex, coordinated investigations, and today’s results show progress is being made.

Seven people have now been charged in connection with the ongoing crackdown on extortion-related crimes - a major step forward in these investigations.

Police across B.C. are working together to hold violent offenders accountable and stop extortion attempts. Abjeet Kingra, who is in custody on another matter, now faces new charges related to extortion in Surrey.

Sat down with the team at Swift 1200 AM in Surrey this morning, where shots were fired at the station. I am relieved no one was hurt, and I am angry at this act of intimidation. The media are a cornerstone of our democracy and targeting them is unacceptable.

The Bishnoi terrorist designation strengthens these efforts — giving police the tools to follow the money, freeze assets and disrupt financing. We will continue to use every tool available to bring criminals to justice.

Glad to see accountability in the 2024 shooting and arson at the Colwood home of well-known Punjabi musician AP Dhillon, where the court noted links to the Bishnoi crime group. This outcome reflects the dedicated work of police and prosecutors.

At the same time, we are breaking the cycle with expanded care. The Premier announced 100 new secure care beds in Surrey and Prince George for people with the most complex needs. This will make streets safer while helping people get the care they need.

But progress only matters if people feel it in their homes, businesses and streets. That is why we have pushed the federal government on bail reform. Tougher laws now mean repeat offenders face real consequences.

This week I heard from local leaders across BC about the urgent need to tackle street disorder and crime. Progress is being made. BC’s crime rate fell 11% last year, the biggest drop in the country, with more officers, housing and mental health supports.
