i've written a blog post about why I think we should reject generative AI in the university: languagemechanics.neocities.org/no-gen-ai

‘where do people think the money comes from?’ is a serious one but it seems clear it’s the specific location (and perhaps history/politics) that makes all of this possible in a way that simply can’t be replicated elsewhere (?)

no, i’m sure it’s just an attitude problem and we can manifest ourselves some precious, limited resources right here if we try hard enough

No, it's not. It's all a lie. The blunt truth is across the 1991, 2001, 2011 and 2021 Census *every* ethnic group in the UK has become *less* geographically segregated and *all* groups, majority and minorities, are more likely to interact with people not like them.

Outstanding piece by Stephen Daisley.

Ethnicity is no barrier to Britishness - it's culture and integration.

That means 'smaller cohorts and aggressive integration policies' - and tackling the institutions that 'have amplified grievance narratives and radical anti-Western ideologies'.

and also: surely a big part in why dubai is the way it is (and can be this way) is the oil, no? where do the people going, ‘the uk should be more like uae’ think that the money comes from?

are some peopel there real experts in the relevant field? is it only confused outsiders? do people know it's a scam but play along because they in turn are scamming someone? so many questions
ninamarkl.bsky.social
pals, does anyone know if the scam conferences we are all constantly invited to actually happen? has anyone tried risking the integrity of their devices and personal data to try and attend? is it just a website? or is there a real event happening?

something genuinely pleasing to see my internal consistency like that

one of my favourite things is re-reading a draft or outline of something i've written and identifying a relevant piece of writing by someone else, going to search for it, and realising i have already downloaded it 12 months ago when i had this exact thought before

i live in hope that we simply do not need to engage with badenoch too much because she won’t make it to significant power

so obviously when the educational system is entirely focused on apprenticeships, the state will invest in big infrastructure projects to make sure they have work and we all benefit from an abundance of housing, great transport and and cheap renewable energy, right?

right?

keep thinking about the downstream damage of vandalising this sector. there are so many jobs directly and tangentially tied to making a university (town) run

As more of my valued colleagues face the threat of redundancy, here’s a quick reminder that it takes years and years of public investment to train an academic. Cutting someone with this wealth of experience loose isn’t “saving” anything. It is a massive waste of our collective resources.
UK Universities in Crisis? Time to Transform Higher Ed Finance
by Rob Hawkes and Scott Ferguson Universities in the UK are in crisis. Job cuts in the sector are reaching ‘cataclysmic’ levels, with an estimated 10,000 already lost and many more at risk. Just da…

yeah wasn’t referring to a language variety but used as an adjective which i thought was unusual in English, you could just say ‘US company’ instead of
ninamarkl.bsky.social
oh as a language variety? in this case it was in the phrase ‘US-American company’
ninamarkl.bsky.social
in German at least that’s a really common adjective to distinguish from ‘American’ which could be all of (North?) America. ‘US-Amerikaner*in’ may be the most standard term for people from the US
