As a response to the far too numerous recent references On Here to "moneylenders in the Temple" (usually meaning Trump), here's a thread about why that phrasing is not merely incorrect, but a carryover from medieval Christian antisemitism & actively harmful to Jews today. 1/

Yeah, I could see that. I suppose that if Israel did release Barghouti they would expel him.
ninamelechen.bsky.social
Is Hamas asking for the release of Barghouti because they expect Israel to refuse? I wouldn’t have expected them to exactly care about him.

I’ll tell Netanyahu where he can put his lulav.

Do you ever think that if US Jews had been able to have a couple of weeks to mourn properly, there would have been a whole lot less support for the Israeli military response from the get-go? I do.

Yes, but…. I’ve seen the same resistance among people asked not to use g*pped, or to say someone w*lshed on a bet. The laziness can be attributed to ignorance of how epithets work, unwillingness to take trouble with language, and other things. It’s not necessarily antisemitism, though in this case….

You know who almost never does this? Palestinians. They recognize and call out antisemitism when they see it.

One of my favorite XKCD cartoons:
XKCD cartoon:

Person 1: SILICATE CHEMISTRY IS SECOND NATURE TO US GEOCHEMISTS, SO
IT'S EASY TO FORGET THAT THE AVERAGE PERSON PROBABLY ONLY KNOWS THE FORMULAS FOR OLIVINE AND ONE OR TWO FELDSPARS.

Person 2: AND QUARTZ, OF COURSE.

Person 1: OF COURSE.

My rheumatologist just retired. So I switched to a guy who’s new to this practice but has a fantastic background. And he has so few patients so far that he spent an hour and a half on my intake appointment and ordered all sorts of tests. I was astounded.

How many of them were protesting you banning Link?

I hope it’s approaching equilibrium.

Perhaps he’s indicating that he’s an eldritch horror or something.

I hope you’re never faced with such a dilemma.

There were new pogroms against returning Jews. That’s not fears, that was reality. blame the US, Britain, or whoever for not taking in refugees and displaced persons after WWII (I sure do). But do not blame people whose homes had been destroyed for going to the only place willing to take them in.

Let’s see: there were about 320,000 Jews living in/returned to Poland in 1946 and about 17,000 today. I wonder why that is and why Jews should go back to face it again?

They couldn’t come up with a single harp?
ninamelechen.bsky.social
No, but they say “thank you sweet.”

Yeah, but the second time you watch The Wire you can hear it.

Try this one simple trick to identify a St. Louis accent: if a word ends in an R and the final syllable is unstressed, the final syllable is two syllables. And sometimes one-syllable words ending in R are two syllables anyway. Fi-yer, choi-yer, mem-oi-yer. He-yer.
