I've been traffic marshalling at the Ottawa Marathon/Army Run (my primary job involves supervising volunteers at barricades to ensure vehicles can't turn onto the race route) for about 10 years.
Change in 10 years - runners increasingly on their own (no partner/group) + looking at their phones.
