Hard to do at scale, for sure. The land bank model also may not result in lower income families "building wealth" at a rate commensurate with other homeowners. A lot of the value in housing is in the land, not the physical structure sitting on it.

There are a lot of interesting initiatives around affordable housing in the city, but this is the first house donation I've heard of.
