Blackwork embroidery. The subject is the Pantheon in Rome. Blackwork embroidery uses geometric patterned stitches with varying thicknesses of thread, as well as deconstruction/negative space to create shading and highlights. This piece is based on a photograph. I took in Rome in 2001. The image is at an angle. The point of view is from the right front.

I scan the negative in turned it into a digital image. Originally, this was a color photograph, but I turned into a black and white one.

Four sunflower blooms on one branch plus really big green leaves. The petals of the sunflower have a orange yellow gradient. The center is brown the top two flowers. Their petals are drooping and fading. The flowers are numbered. The top two are 17 to 21. The third one is 36 and the bottom flower is number 37.

I learned from scientists during covid that cloth absolutely does not stop gases from passing through. And fabric cloths aren’t as good at stopping aerosols or droplets, as opposed to, say, an N95 (which still doesn’t stop gases, so you can, you know, breathe).
