Legal aid is a lifeline. LSC grantees help DV survivors secure protective orders and the stability they need to rebuild.

This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, let’s expand access to justice — because safety and dignity shouldn’t depend on income. #DVAM #DomesticViolence

Historically, DV was seen as a ""family issue,"" and not addressed as a social justice movement. In fact, all until the 70s, it was not only legal but socially accepted for husbands to beat their wives.
NLS is proud to have been an early champion for change in WNY
#NLSSuccess #DVAM2025
Throwback NLS Success story in quote bubble. Attorneys in our Family Law Unit gave special priority to DV cases, and we learned that the police often failed to advise victims of the availability of shelters, or give them written notice of their legal rights and remedies to stop the abuse, leaving them to fend for themselves.
As a result of litigation by NLS, Buffalo police have agreed to give the victims written information about their legal rights when they respond to a call for assistance.

If you have a medical condition that would be affected by a shutoff, you can get a "medical certificate" from your healthcare provider, which will delay the shutoff for 30 days, giving you time to resolve the issue!

When you're behind on your utility bills 💡, the thought of shutoff can be scary. But don't panic - you have options!

Who supports the people supporting our communities? HR of course! Learn more about our HR generalist, Michael, who makes it his mission to always be available when we need him 💙

#EmployeeSpotlight #HumanResources
Employee Spotlight: Michael Lowry, Sr. HR Generalist with headshot of Michael. HR Beginnings: I've been in HR for over 10 years, beginning as an assistant to the HR team at the bank where I was working. It’s something that just kind of grew on me and as my interest grew, I knew I needed more education, so I went back to school while I was working. After graduating Buff State with my BA, I looked into student loan forgiveness programs and saw it would be a benefit for me to work for a non-profit. I began a position at Kaleida, then later, at Bryant & Stratton, and went back to Buff State to gain my master’s. Reaching NLS: I’ve always been interested in helping the community. For 12 years, I volunteered my time as a football coach. When I saw that NLS was hiring, I knew I could help the community through my work, as a way of giving back. Actually, I grew up right in the downtown Buffalo area - Jefferson and Clinton - about 10 minutes from the office.
Michael's Drive: One of the things that drives me is having an impact on someone’s life, helping them make a decision to improve their life. People don’t always know where to find info available to them. I always make it a point to sit and make sure they fully understand the benefits we offer to them. I Love HR: HR gets a bad rap because we’re part of the hiring & firing process - people don’t understand we’re here to help. Not just hiring and firing. HR can be so beneficial in providing info, providing benefits, and being a positive impact on your life. Don’t view in a tunnel vision! Favorite Way to Eat Potatoes with image of cartoon potato in sunglasses: Cheese, sour cream, and of course, lots of butter! Pumpkin Carver or Pumpkin Painter: We’re a pumpkin carving family. It used to be just my grandson and me but now our family has grown with the addition of my girlfriend and her kids. So now we’re up to 5 and we all make our own faces! Go-To Karaoke Song?: My name is Michael Lowry, so gotta be “Bad Boys” (aka the COPS theme song)
