This was my response in The Guardian 3 years ago when I was asked if my work was a response to the prevalence of whiteness in science fiction.

I’m totally patting “January 2021 Nnedi” on the back. Yes, Nnedi. So much yes, 🙌🏾 :
My worlds are African worlds. I'd love to take credit for the culture that is in my worlds' DNA, but I can't. Those cultures existed long before me;I didn't have to imagine them. And my stories certainly don't exist because white male (or female ... let's not forget that white female perspectives also dominate female perspectives in science fiction and fantasy) perspectives refused to imagine them first. My stories aren't a " to whiteness. They exist wholly outside of white-male-anything. These stories that come from my own culture, experiences, from within me, from reflections of specific African cultures. By existing, I'd hope they help bring cultural, ethnic and gender balance to science fiction and fantasy, but that is not my work's reason to exist.

Heh, words.

Those tricky things. 😏

I’m watching the Lilith Fair documentary on Hulu and Sarah McLachlan was explaining the “fair” part of the festival name and she said it was a play on wards, that “fair” could mean “equal”, “attractive”, or “a celebration”.

And I thought, “But Sarah, ‘fair’ can also mean ‘white’.” 🤷🏾‍♀️ Ijs.

Anyway, back to work.

Slowly but surely I will read literally everything @nnedi.bsky.social writes. It is all brilliant. And yes, my statement includes her newest book The Space Cat, and Chicken in the Kitchen. #readMoreBooks #TBRpile #sciFiBooks #read
A screen shot of the cover for Chicken in the Kitchen, a picture book by Nnedi Okorafor. The cover is brightly illustrated, showing a young black girl peering around the corner at a very large multicolor chicken.

My contributor copy of The Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy 2025 is here! Thanks again to @nnedi.bsky.social and @johnjosephadams.com for including my story. 💜

(At first, it seems Wimsey is helpfully posing—until you see how he actually just wants me to stop staring in awe and FEED HIM.)
The Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy is in my left hand. Balanced on my right knee is a buff colored cat, looking solemnly at the camera. The Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy is in my left hand. Balanced on my right knee is a buff colored cat, screaming his indignation at me.

Your story was thought-provoking and refreshingly strange. Congratulations! 😃❤️

"...scars, pain, malfunctions, needed replacements, mistakes. What you were given. The finite. Rusted robots did not die in the way that humans did, but they celebrated mortality. Oh, she loved this story and how true it felt."

"Zelu opened her eyes and smiled. Fifteen minutes had flown by while she reread parts of her novel in her mind. The rusted robots in the story were a metaphor for wisdom, patina, acceptance, embracing that which was you,"

Saw a video about Dick Van Dyke turning 100. Then saw his many decades younger “wife” and just…put down my phone and picked up the book I’m reading.

The Oak Creek Vista Overlook. The Steller’s jay landed in the tree to my left after flying over this natural spectacle.

When I was at the Oak Creek Vista Overlook near Flagstaff, I spotted a type of bird I’ve never seen before (if you have, good for you, but I’m talking about me right now, 😃). A Steller’s jay!

There’s something profound & joyous about an encounter with a bird type you’ve never seen in person.
A slightly out of focus photo of a Steller’s Jay in pine tree. 🌲 This was the best I could do because the bird didn’t stick around, haha. I nearly dropped my phone when I saw it! Look at that crest! It was blue and black. Gorgeous birdie.

Twelve books (mostly novels), including my memoir. Plus an anthology.

I do not even know how to wrap my head around this…which is why I refused to look until now.

Doesn’t sound like an option to me. Not at all.

Like I said, 12 novels.
