Interesting. For many years Houston's population density map has looked a bit like a bullseye target, because cheap auto transport encouraged the second wave development to leapfrog the dirty industrial areas on the outskirts. Now those brownfield sites are being filled in. This is one of them.

![Notwithstanding [Henry] James's reputation for overworking his material — “he chewed more than he bit off,” goes the famous complaint — you never have the feeling that he is wasting the reader's time. Every sentence has a purpose, every scene a place in the whole. To put it in Jamesian terms, there is always a governing intelligence at work behind the page. I missed this intelligence when I read novels by other writers, which so often gave me the enervating sense that things were happening for no reason except that it had occurred to the author to make them happen.

I saw what must have been a predecessor, the UP #844, in Austin, Texas in 2006. Kind of weird to see that these oil burners need a tanker truck to follow them around by road to keep them fueled.
