Oh for sure, and I do think there are other downsides

For start, their use incentivizes writing long repetitive code you might have intuitively abstracted earlier, because they’ll auto suggest / make easier a copy-paste-modify solution. I naturally over-abstract so I’m hoping I balance it out

I also think software might be a rare place where language models are more useful than other fields

- Prompt agents can handle simple refactors or reformats (e.g. create conversion functions recursively between these two api models)
- As a backend engineer, it’s great for making a prototype quality react frontend to use with my code to mess with it/demo it

I’ve found language models can speed up software development a fair bit:

- Smart autocomplete will continue repetitive tasks correctly after 2-3 examples
- Chatbots are great at detecting hard-to-skim-for errors in long config files (misnamed field in kube manifests)
