I decided not to include the photo of his student and one of himself receiving an award from the Harvard Foundation in 2003, but the rather patronizing (of course!) remarks in the caption reads:

It happens that I was having an email exchange with A.W., a student in the Sociology of Music/Sound/Noise course, who suggested that I make a mix of music that annoys my friends and family. It was a great idea, but it that turned out not to work as it meant I had to listen to lots of music that might even annoy me. But as a result of our discussion, I was reminded of a friend who once said that the thing that unites the music I listen to is that it is almost always "Fast and Busy" - even the fairly ambient music or Jazz and world music. The story consists of a taped message from the leader of the country that launched a space station into a highly elliptical orbit around Earth. The station is equipped with ICBMs capable of reaching targets anywhere on Earth, to deter war through mutually assured destruction. As the story progresses, we hear the leader's instructions, interspersed with the reactions of the crew of the space station, who are identified only by their titles (e.g., "the First Radar Officer"). The reader learns that the message is one of many taped messages for various situations, that nuclear war has occurred on Earth, and that the country that controls this space station has been defeated and almost totally destroyed. The crew are prepared to destroy the enemy country, but their leader orders them not to do so, saying that, as half of mankind has been destroyed, to destroy the other half solely for vengeance would be "insanity, unworthy of reasoning men". In the last sentence of the story, we learn that this space station is controlled by the Soviet Union, and that the enemy was the United States

Abstract As part of their defence of evolutionary theory, T. H. Huxley and Herbert Spencer argued that natural history was no longer a legitimate scientific discipline. They outlined a secularized concept of life from biology to argue for the validity of naturalism. Despite their support for naturalism, they offered two different responses to the decline of natural history. Whereas Huxley emphasized the creation of a biological discipline, and all that that entailed, Spencer was more concerned with constructing an entire intellectual system based on the idea of evolution. In effect, Spencer wanted to create a new scientific worldview based on evolutionary theory. This had consequences for their understanding of human history, especially of how science had evolved through the ages. It affected their conceptions of human agency, contingency, and directionality in history. Examining Huxley's and Spencer's responses to the “end” of natural history reveals some of the deep divisions within scientific naturalism and the inherent problems of naturalism in general. Whereas Huxley chose to separate the natural and the historical, Spencer opted to fuse them into a single system.

Resemblance between Man and the Monkey. Aristotle disapproved of very small eyes. Galen says that very small eyes, such as monkeys have, are a sure mark of pusillanimity, which may be readily discovered in the manners of the possessor. Polemon and Adamantius represent the miser with such eyes. Turtles have small eyes, and are extremely sly and cunning. He who has a flat nose, says Aristotle to Alexander, is impetuous; but the ancient translation from that author is incorrect: it should have been rendered lascivious: otherwise, he has contradicted himself; for in his treatise on Physiognomy he compares the man with a flat nose to the stag, which has one similar, and this animal is so lustful, that in the time of rutting he becomes crazy. A nose both short and flat, says Polemon, denotes a thievish disposition. Small ears, according: to Aristotie, are common to such men as are naturally dull, and addicted to thieving, as is the monkey. Polemon and Adamantius are of opinion, that they are peculiar to the cunning and malignant man; and according to Albert, they generally belong to the thief. Adamantius asserts that a small face designates the sly and flattering man; to which Rhases and Conciliator add timorous and covetous.
