Technology has made it too easy to apply to jobs, meaning postings get hundreds or thousands of applicants. It's horrible for applicants and employers - adding a small friction at the beginning means less pain in the interview/selection stages

The MTA changed their fare evasion fines this year from $100/ticket to a ramping fine system. I did the math: it turns out your new expected annual cost from hopping the turnstile 480 times per year is just $4.88, down nearly 90% compared to the old system (1/5)
