“Storm’s comin’.” Sarah Fortune shifted to the side wordlessly to make space on the narrow stern of the Syren. Rafen settled in, leaning on the railing beside her. “You feel it too, don’t you?” “Yeah,” Sarah said with a sigh, tipping her head up towards the sky. Rafen grunted, and she grinned. “What, no advice for your captain this time around?” He shrugged, the movement jostling her arm. “Nothing you’d want to hear.” The admission settled like the stench of rotting sea serpent guts in the air between them, souring the grin on her face. No, she did not want to hear the fact that she’d been refusing to admit to herself. Not when she was this close. Regardless. “Gather the crew at sundown.” Rafen hummed pensively. “You sure?” “We’re not turning back,” she admitted. “But I’ll make it work.” He laughed softly. “Aye, cap’n,” he drawled, sincere and fond. “You always do.” She flashed him a grateful smile, tipping her hat before she stalked off to her cabin to plot. The board was set, the pieces were in play, and Sarah Fortune was willing to roll the dice and weather the storm. The door slammed shut behind her, blocking out the clear skies and the ever growing silhouette of Piltover and Zaun on the horizon.

Margot turned the letter over in between her fingers, letting the edges of it just barely cut her skin. An invitation. From that girl. Calling for a meeting of the barons. Margot briefly entertained the idea of declining, or, more audaciously, not responding and not showing up at all to the girl’s summons. She had enough pride as a baron to at least ponder the thought. But…curiosity hadn’t killed Margot yet. The girl was new. And she’d even managed to upset Chross, that old meatbag. That earned her a point in Margot’s book, at least. *And* the girl had written a special message, just for her. Her handwriting was impeccably neat, almost insultingly penned with an elegant effort Margot was unused to seeing down in the Lanes; that, alongside the girl’s promise to Margot made the invitation just a little bit intriguing. How could she possibly say no to such a deal, even when it was with the devil? “Millie,” Margot said aloud to her lieutenant, standing across from her. “Looks like I’ve got a date with tall, dark, and handsome. Let’s go.”
