100 years ago today a fire swept New Orleans' coffee docks
New Orleans coffee dock fire 1925 100 years ago today, on November 17, 1925, a fire swept the Port of New Orleans coffee docks on the upper end of the Girod Street Wharf. The flames, fanned by high winds, destroyed seven blocks of the docks in thirty minutes and caused over $4.5 million worth of damage. The goods destroyed included between $2.75 million and $3.5 million worth of coffee. According to The Times Picayune, “The flames licked heavenward, leaping hundreds of feet into the air, and illuminated all of New Orleans, their tremendous spread making it appear as if the entire city was in flames. Streets leading towards the river became congested with thousands of automobiles. So dense was the crowd of spectators at the fire that their automobiles lined the streets leading to the docks as far back as Tchoupitoulas Street from Canal and as far uptown as Julia.” In the end, the fire turned out to be a blessing in disguise: the city's coffee import system was updated with modern (for the time) technology, allowing the city to be more on par with New York's coffee import system. A new coffee shed was dedicated 3 years later in October 1928, boasting two stories of fireproof steel and concrete and a price tag of $2 million.
