Correct, limiting entry to nursing in *any way* is stupid. Shortage is real and due to

⬆️ retirements
⬆️ aging population
⬆️ need for advanced practice nurses in primary care
⬇️ nursing faculty due in part to ⬆️$ in clinical practice vs. academia
⬇️ working conditions, ⬆️ stress

The long explanation matters. I was in GDR and Czechoslovakia in ‘89 as a teenager and for very little time. The heaviness of the surveillance and restrictions was omnipresent and incredibly in your face even then, and this was towards the end. We are not there. We need to act to keep it that way.
